Chapter 10: The Viper in the Louvre

The private gala at the Louvre Museum was a masterclass in suffocating opulence. The grand halls, lined with the greatest artistic achievements in human history, had been transformed into an exclusive playground for the global financial elite. Waiters in white tuxedos circulated with trays of vintage champagne, while a string quartet played softly in the shadow of the Winged Victory of Samothrace.

I stood beside Nico, a vision in a custom, midnight-blue velvet gown that cascaded to the marble floor. A diamond choker, a priceless Rossi heirloom, rested against my collarbones. Nico stood tall and impenetrable beside me, a dark god in a flawless black tuxedo. Our mere presence had caused a physical ripple through the crowd upon our arrival.

"He’s approaching," Nico murmured, his hand resting securely on the small of my back.

I didn't turn my head immediately. I took a slow, elegant sip of my champagne before shifting my gaze.

Julian Laurent was walking toward us, flanked by two nervous-looking executives. Julian was in his late forties, possessing the kind of refined, aristocratic arrogance that came from generational wealth. He wore a velvet smoking jacket and a smile that didn't reach his cold, calculating eyes.

"Nico Rossi," Julian greeted, his French accent thick with condescension. He didn't offer his hand. "I am surprised to see you in Paris. I was under the impression your recent... domestic bliss had kept you confined to New York."

Julian’s eyes slid to me, assessing me with a dismissive, patronizing glance. "And this must be the new Mrs. Rossi. Luna, isn't it? A charming name for a charming girl."

Nico’s jaw locked. The air around him dropped ten degrees, the lethal enforcer instantly rising to the surface. He was preparing to mentally and physically dismantle the Frenchman. But I placed a gentle, restraining hand on Nico’s forearm. I didn't want a scene. I wanted a slaughter.

"It is a pleasure to finally meet you, Julian," I said smoothly, my voice carrying clearly over the ambient noise of the gala. "I have spent the last three days intimately reviewing your financials. It’s fascinating reading."

Julian’s smug smile faltered for a microsecond. "My financials? I assure you, my dear, the mechanics of the Laurent Syndicate are far too complex for a layman to grasp."

"They really aren't," I replied, stepping slightly forward, closing the distance. "In fact, they are remarkably simple once you look past the aristocratic smoke and mirrors. You leveraged your tech holdings to short our shipping lines. You assumed you could bleed us slowly. But you forgot one crucial detail, Julian."

"And what is that?" Julian sneered, though a flicker of genuine unease now danced in his eyes.

"You forgot that I control the Rossi acquisitions division," I smiled, a dark, terrifying expression that mirrored my husband's ruthlessness perfectly. "At 4:00 PM Eastern Standard Time today, while you were busy selecting your velvet jacket for this gala, Rossi Enterprises executed a hostile takeover of your three primary tech suppliers. We didn't just buy them, Julian. We absorbed them. And an hour ago, I personally signed the directive to permanently terminate all their contracts with the Laurent Syndicate."

The color drained entirely from Julian’s face. The two executives standing behind him gasped, realizing instantly what this meant.

"You... you can't," Julian stammered, his aristocratic poise completely shattering. "That breaches the vendor agreements! I will sue you in international court!"

"You will try," Nico spoke, his voice a low, echoing rumble of absolute authority. "But by the time your lawyers file the paperwork, your supply chain will have been dead for six months. Your stock will plummet. Your shareholders will panic. You will default on the massive loans you took out to fight me, Julian."

"You are bankrupt, Julian," I stated, delivering the final, fatal blow. "You looked at me and saw a vulnerability. You thought Nico was distracted. But I am not a distraction. I am the architect of your ruin."

Julian staggered backward, his champagne glass trembling in his hand. He looked around wildly for support, but the surrounding European elite had gone dead silent, watching the brutal public execution of one of their own.

"Enjoy the art, Julian," I said softly, turning my back on the ruined aristocrat.

Nico wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me flush against his side, his chest vibrating with a dark, resonant chuckle. As we walked away, leaving Julian Laurent drowning in the ashes of his legacy, Nico leaned down and pressed a fierce kiss to my temple.

"Magnificent," Nico whispered, his voice thick with pride. "Absolutely magnificent."
