Chapter 8: The Queen's Checkmate

Six weeks later. New York City.

The trap we had sprung in Tuscany had ripple effects that restructured the global market. Moretti had signed the contract, surrendering his shipping lines at a fraction of their value, too terrified of my evidence to put up a fight. The merger was complete, and Rossi Enterprises had effectively doubled its net worth, creating a monopoly that was practically untouchable.

But today, the ledgers and the boardrooms were entirely forgotten.

Today was the wedding.

The venue wasn't a hotel ballroom or a public cathedral. We had rented out the entirety of the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue. The iconic, massive marble halls had been transformed into a breathtaking sanctuary of thousands of white roses, hundreds of floating candles, and a guest list that included heads of state, global CEOs, and the true elite of the world.

I stood in the makeshift bridal suite—a historic reading room filled with leather-bound books and soaring ceilings. I looked at myself in the antique mirror.

My gown was a masterpiece of Italian silk and intricate, hand-sewn lace. It featured a dramatic, sweeping train, long lace sleeves, and a bodice that fit like a second skin. My hair was pinned up in an elegant, intricate twist, secured with a diamond comb that had been in the Rossi family for three generations.

I wasn't the scared, heartbroken girl who had walked into the Grandon Hotel a year ago, shattered by Liam's betrayal and Amber's cruelty. I had shed that skin. I was Luna Rossi. I was power.

There was a soft knock on the door.

My father walked in. He looked incredibly handsome in his classic tuxedo, but his eyes were shining with unshed tears. He had watched me go through hell, watched me rebuild myself, and watched as Nico and I forged an unbreakable bond.

"You look..." my father choked up, pressing a hand to his mouth. "You look like an angel, Luna."

"Don't cry, Dad," I smiled, carefully walking over to him and taking his hands. "If you cry, I'll cry, and the makeup artist will yell at both of us."

He laughed through his tears, pulling me into a gentle hug. "I'm just so proud of you. And Nico... he is a good man. A hard man, yes. But the way he looks at you... I know you are safe with him."

"I am," I whispered. "He is my home."

The music began to swell from the main hall—a hauntingly beautiful string quartet playing a classical piece that echoed through the marble corridors. It was time.

My father offered me his arm, and we walked out of the suite.

The Astor Hall was breathtaking. The massive marble arches were illuminated by warm, golden light. As I appeared at the top of the grand staircase, the entire room—five hundred of the most powerful people on the planet—stood in unison.

But I didn't see the European bankers. I didn't see the politicians. I didn't see the socialites who had once whispered about the "scandal."

I only saw him.

Nico stood at the end of the long aisle, waiting under an archway of white roses. He was breathtaking. He wore a flawless, bespoke black tuxedo, his silver hair perfectly styled, his broad shoulders commanding the massive space effortlessly.

But it was his face that made my heart stop.

The ruthless, terrifying billionaire who made grown men tremble was standing at the altar with his entire soul laid bare in his eyes. He looked at me as if I were the only breathing thing left on earth. The sheer, overwhelming devotion in his gaze brought tears to my eyes.

As I walked down the aisle, every step felt like a victory march. This wasn't just a wedding; it was the ultimate checkmate. I had taken the worst moment of my life and used it to conquer the world.

When my father handed me over, Nico took my hand. His grip was warm, strong, and deeply anchoring. He pulled me close, ignoring the officiant for a brief second, to press a kiss to my forehead.

"You are my entire world," Nico whispered fiercely, his voice rough with emotion.

"And you are mine," I replied, looking up into his dark eyes.

The ceremony was a blur of ancient traditions, poetic vows, and the overwhelming weight of the promises we made. When Nico slid the heavy, platinum wedding band onto my finger, securing it next to the massive emerald-cut diamond, it felt like locking the final piece of my life into place.

"I pronounce you husband and wife," the officiant finally declared. "You may kiss the bride."

Nico didn't hesitate. He wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me flush against him, and kissed me with a consuming, passionate fire that made the entire room erupt into deafening applause. It was a kiss that tasted of victory, of shared power, and of a love so deep it defied every law of nature.

Later that night, during the reception, Nico and I stood on the massive balcony overlooking the glittering lights of Fifth Avenue. The music and laughter from our guests drifted out into the cool night air.

Nico stood behind me, his arms wrapped securely around me, my back resting against his chest. I rested my hands over his, feeling the cool metal of his wedding band.

"Liam sent a letter," Nico murmured quietly, breaking the comfortable silence.

I stiffened slightly, but Nico's grip tightened, reassuring me.

"What did it say?" I asked, my voice indifferent.

"He begged for a loan. Said he lost his job in the Midwest. He wanted to know if I had forgiven him," Nico said, his voice devoid of any paternal warmth. "He wanted a second chance."

"And what did you do with the letter?" I asked, turning my head to look up at him.

Nico smiled, a dark, ruthless curve of his lips. "I burned it. I have no son named Liam. I only have a Queen. And our legacy starts today."

I turned fully in his arms, wrapping my arms around his neck. The ghosts of the past were completely eradicated. There was no more revenge to plot. No more betrayals to fear. We had burned down the old world and built an empire out of the ashes.

"I love you, Mr. Rossi," I whispered, pulling him down for a kiss.

May you like

"I love you, Mrs. Rossi," Nico replied, his dark eyes shining with absolute victory.

The king and queen of New York had finally taken their thrones, and the reign we were about to unleash on the world would be legendary.
