Chapter 12: Restoring the Lineage

The grand hall was finally quiet. The toxic, suffocating energy that Eleanor had brought into the manor for years had vanished with the slam of the door.

Maximilian turned back to Clara, who was still standing by the column, her apron full of loose, ivory pearls. He walked over to her slowly, his face softening once again into the expression of a protective older brother. He knelt down before her, gently taking the heavy silver polishing cloth from her hands and throwing it onto the floor.

"You will never clean another floor in this house, Clara," he said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "This home belongs to you just as much as it belongs to me."

Clara looked around the vast marble hallway, and for the first time in her eighteen years of life, the cold white stone didn't feel like a prison. It felt like a foundation. She looked down at the largest pearl clutched in her hand, tracing the intricate engraving of the soaring phoenix with her thumb.

Maximilian gently closed his hands around hers. "Tomorrow, we will find the finest jeweler in the city. We will take every single one of these pearls, and we will restring your necklace with a wire made of pure, unbreakable gold."

Clara let out a small, breathless sob, but this time, it was a sob of pure, overwhelming relief. She looked at her brother and smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached her deep violet-blue eyes.

The necklace her mother had given her had fulfilled its final, desperate promise. It had broken under the weight of cruelty, but in its destruction, it had shattered the lies of the manor and finally led the lost heir back to her rightful home.
