Chapter 5: The Engraving on the Pearl

Ignoring Eleanor’s dramatic sighs, Maximilian walked directly over to Clara. The absolute despair radiating from the young girl was too heavy to ignore. Moving with a quiet dignity that contrasted sharply with his wife's arrogance, the master of the house knelt on the freezing marble floor beside the maid.
"Let me help you," Maximilian said softly, his long fingers extending to gather three stray pearls that had rolled near his leather boots.
Clara flinched away initially, terrified of receiving another blow, but as she realized his intention, she simply held out her trembling apron, her tear-stained face pale and ruined.
Maximilian reached out to pick up the largest bead—the central pendant pearl that had rolled into a small groove near the base of a towering column. His fingers brushed against the smooth, organic surface of the warm ivory sphere. He lifted it to hand it back to Clara, but as the ambient light of the chandeliers hit the pearl, his breath caught in his throat.
The master of the house froze completely. His body went rigid, his hand hanging suspended in mid-air.

His eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing shock as he brought the pearl closer to his face. There, carved deep into the organic layers of the pearl with microscopic precision, was an intricate, unmistakable engraving. It wasn't an ornamental design; it was a deeply etched family crest—a soaring phoenix rising from a crown.
"This..." Maximilian’s voice dropped to a terrified whisper, all the authority draining from his body as a sudden, violent trembling took over his hands. "This is my mother’s personal seal."
