Chapter 3: Scattered Memories on Marble

"Don’t wear this cheap trash in my house!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice pitched to a sharp, glass-shattering register as her face contorted with unbridled disdain. "You disgust me, trying to mimic your betters with pathetic trinkets."
Clara dropped to her knees, completely ignoring the painful impact of her joints against the hard marble. A torrent of hot, devastating tears burst from her eyes, blurring her vision as she watched her most prized possession scatter in a hundred different directions. The pearls danced and rolled across the pristine floor, disappearing under heavy mahogany side tables and bouncing off the bases of marble statues.
To Eleanor, it was a piece of cheap garbage, a violation of her household dress code. But to Clara, this necklace was everything.
It wasn't a piece of jewelry; it was her anchor to reality, her most prized possession, and the only physical connection to a past she could barely remember.

It was the very necklace her mother had placed into her small, trembling hands inside a dark, impoverished hospital room right before she drew her final breath. Her mother’s parting words had been a desperate whisper: Never take it off, Clara. It will lead you home.
Now, the home she had found was a nightmare, and her mother's final gift lay shattered in the dirt. Clara scrambled across the floor on her hands and knees, her chest heaving with suffocating, heartbroken sobs as she tried to gather the rolling beads into her apron. Her fingers shook so violently she could barely pick them up.
