Chapter 6: A Decades-Old Mystery Unraveled

The hallway fell into an oppressive, suffocating silence. Even Eleanor’s smug expression began to waver, her brow furrowing in confusion as she looked at her husband’s stunned posture.

"Maximilian? What on earth are you talking about?" Eleanor asked, a sharp note of defensiveness creeping into her tone. "It's just a cheap, dirty bead. Throw it away and fire her."

Maximilian ignored his wife entirely. The rest of the world had vanished. He turned his gaze slowly toward the sobbing girl in the red dress, his expression completely transformed from detached pity to a frantic, overwhelming desperation. He grabbed Clara’s shoulders, his grip tight but remarkably gentle.

"Clara," he breathed, his voice cracking with an emotion he hadn't felt in twenty years. "Where did you get this necklace? Tell me the truth. Right now."

Clara pulled her apron closer to her chest, hugging herself protectively as fresh tears spilled over her eyelashes. "It’s the only thing my mother left me when she died in the charity ward," she cried out, her voice cracked with old, deep-seated grief. "She told me never to take it off. She said it was the only proof I had of who I actually was."

Maximilian’s mind raced as the pieces of a decades-old family mystery finally began to fall into place with the terrifying, beautiful precision of a collapsing house of cards. The timeline matched perfectly. The fire that had destroyed their old estate twenty years ago had happened when his sister was just a toddler. They had never found a body—only ash. His mother had spent her final days insisting her baby girl was still alive, wearing the very pearl necklace her father had commissioned for her birth.
