Chapter 2: The Snap of the Silk String

Lurking just beneath the neckline of Clara’s simple garment was a modest strand of pearls. They weren't perfectly uniform, nor did they possess the aggressive, blinding luster of the modern jewelry Eleanor collected in her vaults. These pearls were old, mellowed by time to a soft, warm ivory glow, held together by a frayed, tightly knotted silk string.
Eleanor’s eyes narrowed into slits as she spotted the jewelry. A look of profound, elitist disgust contorted her aristocratic features, turning her beauty into something grotesque.
"What is that wretched thing around your neck?" Eleanor hissed, her voice cutting through the echoing stillness of the marble hall like a whip.
Clara gasped, her hand instinctively flying upward to cover the pearls, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. "It’s... it’s nothing, ma'am. Just a personal keepsake. I keep it tucked away—"
"Keepsake? In my house?" Eleanor took a predatory step forward, the emerald silk of her dress billowing behind her like a poisonous cloud. "You are a maid, a charity case plucked from the gutter. You do not wear jewelry in this manor. You do not pretend to be something you are not."
Before Clara could step back, Eleanor’s hand shot out with terrifying, aggressive velocity. Her sharp, manicured nails scraped against Clara’s collarbone as her fingers wrapped violently around the pearl strand. Clara let out a sharp cry of pain, but Eleanor didn't hesitate. With a brutal, downward yank, she threw her weight into the motion.

The luxurious marble hallway echoed with the harsh, violent sound of a breaking silk string.
The structural integrity of the necklace failed instantly. The tightly knotted string snapped with a sound like a small whip crack, and the warm ivory beads were violently liberated from Clara's skin. With a cruel flick of her wrist, Eleanor tossed the broken remnant away, sending the loose pearls clattering sharply across the polished, freezing floor.
