Part 15: The Public Trap

Julian took the microphone.

“Welcome.”

His voice was smooth.

Cinematic.

He didn’t overact.

He didn’t shout.

He used the quiet confidence of a predator.

“Tonight, we celebrate the Vale Foundation.”

He looked directly at me.

“And its generous founder, Mara.”

The crowd clapped.

Clueless.

Blind to the venom in the room.

Julian stepped off the stage.

He walked slowly toward our table.

The crowd parted for him.

Money always parts the sea.

He stopped in front of me.

“Mara.”

“Julian,” I said.

My voice didn’t shake.

He looked at Lily.

“Beautiful child.”

Caleb stepped forward.

“Don’t look at her.”

Julian smiled softly.

“You took my family’s legacy, Mara.”

A pause.

“I’m just here to take it back.”

“The foundation belongs to the people now,” I said.

May you like

Julian leaned in close.

“Not for long.”
