Giving money back felt like an admission of guilt.

One afternoon, Marcus Vance walked into my office.

He wore a custom suit and a scowl.

He expected me to be intimidated.

He slammed his hands on my desk.

“You are making a fool of this family, Mara.”

“You are giving away power to peasants.”

I didn’t raise my voice.

I didn’t stand up.
