Part 20: No More Shadows
I ran forward.
I grabbed Lily and pulled her to my chest.
Caleb wrapped his arms around both of us.
My mother stood up, breathing heavily.
She looked at Julian being handcuffed.
“You were always the stupid brother,” she whispered.
Julian didn’t look back.
The helicopters faded.
The sirens stopped.
We stood on the roof, looking at the city.
The empire was truly gone now.
The monsters were in cages.
The past was finally closed.
I held Lily tight.
She rested her head on my shoulder.
“Are we safe now, Mom?”
I looked at Caleb.
I looked at my mother.
We had faced the ghosts.
We had protected our own.
I kissed my daughter’s forehead.
“Yes, my love.”
A pause.
“We are finally safe.”
The wind felt different now.
Not cold.
Just free.
