Chapter 2 - Ghosts of the Past

The silence hanging in the executive corridor felt suffocating. Adrian stood slowly, holding the faded photograph between his long fingers. His dark blue eyes locked onto mine, stripping away every defensive wall I had built over the last seven years.
"My office. Now," Adrian commanded smoothly, his voice dropping into a register that brook no argument.
He looked at Mia, softening his tone instantly. "Mia, sweetheart, would you like Gerald to have some apple juice while your mother and I talk?"
Mia grinned brightly. "Gerald loves apple juice!"
Adrian gestured for his personal assistant, Sarah, who stepped forward with a warm smile, taking Mia’s small hand and leading her toward the lounge area.
I walked into Adrian’s massive corner office, the glass doors clicking shut behind me. The city skyline stretched out through floor-to-ceiling windows, but all I could focus on was the man standing across from me, holding the image of my past.
"This is Julian," Adrian said, holding up the picture. His voice was laced with disbelief. "My elder brother who vanished seven years ago."
I closed my eyes briefly, taking a slow breath. "I know."
Adrian walked toward me, his presence overwhelming. "Julian cut off all ties with the Kane family in 2019. Six months later, we were told he died in an avalanche in Switzerland. No body was ever recovered. And now my senior creative director is holding a photo of him from seven years ago?"
"Julian didn't die in Switzerland, Adrian," I whispered, meeting his fierce gaze. "He was living under an assumed name in Seattle. We met in art school. We were together for two years before... before he passed away."
Adrian's jaw tightened. "Passed away? How?"
"An undiagnosed heart condition," I explained, my voice trembling slightly. "He died three weeks before Mia was born. He never got to hold his daughter."
Adrian froze. The sharp, decisive CEO vanished, replaced by a man struck by an invisible force. He turned his head toward the glass wall, looking out at the lounge where Mia was happily giggling with Sarah.
"Mia... is Julian's daughter?" Adrian whispered, his breath catching in his chest.
"Yes," I admitted softly. "She is a Kane."
Adrian ran a hand over his face, processing the shock. "Why didn't you ever come to the family, Clara? Why hide it? You've worked at my company for three years! You knew who I was!"
"Because Julian told me everything about your family before he died," I said firmly, stepping closer. "He told me about your stepmother, Victoria. He told me how she pushed him out, turned your father against him, and threatened to destroy anyone who challenged her control over the family trust."
Adrian's expression turned grim. "Victoria."
"Julian was terrified of her," I continued, tears pricking the corners of my eyes. "He made me promise that if anything ever happened to him, I would keep our baby as far away from the Kane family empire as possible. I didn't join Blackwell & Reed because of your last name, Adrian. I got hired through an anonymous recruitment drive. I stayed because I needed to support my daughter."
Adrian looked back at the photograph, then at me. The icy distance he usually maintained seemed to melt away entirely.
"Julian was running from Victoria," Adrian said softly. "Not from me. I spent seven years believing my brother abandoned me."
He walked over to his desk, placed the photo carefully inside a velvet box, and locked it. When he looked back at me, his eyes held a strange, burning intensity.
"Victoria still controls thirty percent of the board shares," Adrian said quietly. "If she finds out Julian left a direct heir, Mia's life will become a political nightmare."
"Which is why no one can know," I pleaded.

Adrian stepped up to me, standing close enough that I could feel the faint warmth radiating from his suit jacket.
"I won't let Victoria touch her," Adrian promised, his voice dropping into a solemn vow. "Mia is my niece, Clara. And starting today, you are no longer facing this alone."
