Chapter 8 - Unmasking the Deception

The study fell into a heavy, suffocating silence. Adrian stood motionless, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of his mahogany desk.
"Poison," Adrian repeated, the word tasting like venom on his tongue. "She murdered him because he was going to expose her embezzlement of the family foundation."
"Dr. Pendelton has the original lab receipts saved on a private server," I said, holding out my phone. "He's emailing them to your legal team right now."
Adrian’s expression transformed into something lethal. The corporate billionaire was gone; in his place stood a brother driven by absolute, unyielding rage.
"We aren't waiting until tomorrow's board meeting," Adrian said, his voice deadly quiet. "Call Marcus and the security team. We are going to the Kane Estate tonight."
Two hours later, three black SUVs pulled up to the wrought-iron gates of the historic Kane Estate in Upstate New York.
The massive limestone mansion sat dark against the stormy night sky. As we stepped into the grand foyer, Victoria was waiting at the bottom of the curved marble staircase, wearing a silk dressing gown, holding a glass of wine.
"Adrian?" Victoria scoffed, looking at the security guards filing into her hallway. "Have you lost your mind? Trespassing on my property with an armed force?"
"It's not your property, Victoria," Adrian said calmly, stepping forward into the chandelier light. "This estate was built by my grandfather. And you turned it into a crime scene seven years ago."
Victoria’s eyes flickered with a brief moment of anxiety before she forced a laugh. "What ridiculous nonsense are you talking about now?"
I stepped out from behind Adrian, holding an iPad displaying the certified medical lab reports signed by Dr. Pendelton.
"Digitalis poisoning, Victoria," I said, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "We have the original blood analysis from Seattle. We have the wire transfer logs showing you paid fifty thousand dollars to the King County coroner to cremate Julian's body before an official autopsy could be performed."
Victoria dropped her wine glass. It shattered against the marble floor, dark red liquid splashing like blood across her white slippers.
"That... that's a lie!" she shrieked, backing up against the stairs. "Dr. Pendelton signed a non-disclosure agreement!"
"Which confirms you paid him," Adrian said coldly, stepping right up to her. "You murdered my brother because he found out you were stealing from the charity trust. You forced him to run, tracked him down, and killed him."
Two state police cruisers pulled into the driveway outside, their red and blue lights flashing bright against the rain-slicked glass windows.
Four state troopers entered the foyer, led by the District Attorney himself.
"Victoria Kane," the District Attorney announced firmly, holding up a federal warrant. "You are under arrest for the murder of Julian Kane, grand larceny, and obstruction of justice."
Victoria looked around frantically—at the police, at the security team, at the evidence on the iPad, and finally at Adrian's cold, uncompromising face.

"You ruined everything!" Victoria screamed at me as the officers grabbed her arms and snapped steel handcuffs around her wrists. "You and that worthless child!"
"That child is the heir to everything you tried to steal," I said calmly as they dragged her out the front doors into the pouring rain. "And you will spend the rest of your life in a cell thinking about it."
