Chapter 4 - Shadow over the Empire

Moving into Adrian’s Tribeca penthouse felt like stepping into another universe.
The two-story apartment was a masterpiece of modern architecture—concrete, floor-to-ceiling glass, polished wood, and priceless contemporary art. Yet, within twenty-four hours, Mia had transformed the austere living room by building a sprawling blanket fort using five thousand-dollar cashmere throws.
To my surprise, Adrian didn't mind at all. In fact, he had helped her reinforce the roof with two brass floor lamps.
On Tuesday evening, the night of the shareholder dinner, I stood in front of the mirror in the guest suite dressing room. I wore an elegant black tailored jumpsuit with sharp geometric lapels—professional, powerful, yet understated.
A light knock sounded at the door.
"Clara?" Adrian's voice called out.
"Come in," I replied, adjusting my silver earrings.
Adrian stepped inside, looking devastatingly handsome in a bespoke charcoal tuxedo. He paused for a moment, his gaze sweeping over me with clear appreciation before meeting my eyes in the glass.
"You look incredible," he said smoothly.
"Thank you," I said, feeling a slight flush warm my cheeks. "How is Mia?"
"She's upstairs with Mrs. Gable, my head housekeeper," Adrian smiled. "They're currently negotiating over how many bedtime stories constitute a 'fair trade' for eating broccoli."
I smiled softly, turning to face him. "She really likes you, Adrian."
"The feeling is entirely mutual," he replied softly. He walked over, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet box. He opened it to reveal a delicate vintage necklace featuring a tear-drop sapphire set in platinum.
"This belonged to my mother," Adrian said quietly. "Julian wanted to give it to his future wife before he left. Victoria tried to claim it during the estate audit, but I hid it."
My breath caught in my throat. "Adrian... I can't wear that to Victoria's dinner. She'll recognize it instantly!"
"That's the point," Adrian said, his eyes flashing with sharp intelligence. "Victoria thinks she holds all the cards. Tonight, I want her to know that her time of manipulating the Kane family is coming to an end. Put it on."
He stepped behind me, lifting the delicate chain around my neck. His warm fingers brushed against the skin of my collarbone as he fastened the clasp, sending a shiver down my spine.
"We are going in there as a united front, Clara," Adrian whispered near my ear, his breath warm against my skin. "Show her who runs Blackwell & Reed's creative vision."
An hour later, we entered the private dining room of the Gotham Club.
The long mahogany table was surrounded by the company's senior board members. Sitting at the head of the table was Victoria Kane—a woman in her late fifties with ice-blonde hair, sharp features, and an aura of icy arrogance.
As Adrian walked in with me beside him, Victoria's sharp eyes immediately dropped to my necklace.
The color drained from her manicured face. Her fork clattered against her porcelain plate.
"Adrian," Victoria said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as she forced a tight smile. "I see you've brought our creative director. I didn't realize staff members were invited to executive strategy sessions."

"Clara isn't just staff tonight, Victoria," Adrian said calmly, pulling out a chair for me right across from her. "She is the key to our company's future. And as it turns out... she has deep roots in our past."
Victoria's eyes narrowed, flickering between the sapphire necklace and my face, realizing in an instant that the quiet woman managing her company's brand was carrying a secret powerful enough to destroy her entire empire.
