Chapter 5 - Protecting What Matters

The tension inside the Gotham Club's private dining room was so thick it could be cut with a knife.
Victoria adjusted her diamond bracelet, her gaze fixed on the sapphire resting against my throat. "An intriguing piece of jewelry, Miss Vance. It looks remarkably similar to an heirloom that disappeared from the Kane estate seven years ago."
"It didn't disappear, Victoria," Adrian replied smoothly, sipping his sparkling water. "Julian left it in my care before he moved out. He wanted it given to the mother of his child."
The entire table went dead silent. Three senior board members froze mid-bite, exchanging startled looks.
Victoria’s posture stiffened into steel. "Julian died without issue. That was verified by the estate executors seven years ago."
"Your executors were sloppy," I spoke up, keeping my voice perfectly steady, looking Victoria straight in the eye. "Julian lived in Seattle under his middle name. We had a daughter, Mia. She is six years old, and she carries the Kane bloodline."
Victoria gave a harsh, bitter laugh. "A child? Appearing out of nowhere right when Adrian faces a board restructuring? How convenient. Any opportunist can fabricate a story to claim a piece of a billionaire trust."
"The DNA results were finalized this morning by two independent laboratories," Adrian said, pulling a sealed document from his breast pocket and laying it flat on the table. "Mia is Julian's legal heir. Which means, according to our father's original will, thirty percent of the board voting rights automatically transfer from your temporary stewardship to a master trust managed by Clara."
Victoria's face turned a dangerous shade of crimson. Her fingers dug into the silk tablecloth. "This is an ambush!"
"No, Victoria," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal whisper. "This is justice. You spent seven years pushing Julian away, lying about his choices, and trying to dismantle everything my father built. It ends tonight."
"I will contest this in court!" Victoria spat out, standing up so fast her chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. "I will hire every forensic investigator in the state! I will prove this woman is a fraud!"
"Feel free to try," Adrian replied calmly. "In the meantime, the board will convene on Friday to formally recognize Clara's voting proxy. Goodnight, Victoria."
Victoria glared at me with pure venom before grabbing her clutch and sweeping out of the room, her heels clicking angrily against the floor.
After the remaining board members offered nervous congratulations and hurried out, I finally let out a long breath, slumping slightly in my chair.
"You handled that brilliantly," Adrian said softly, reaching across the table to cover my hand with his.
"My heart was beating so fast I thought my ribs would snap," I admitted, looking at him with a weary smile.
"You were magnificent," he said genuinely, his eyes warm. "Julian would have been so proud of the mother you've become."
We drove back to the Tribeca penthouse in comfortable silence. The city lights blurred past the tinted windows, creating a soft cocoon around us.
When we arrived, the apartment was quiet. Mrs. Gable reported that Mia was fast asleep in her bedroom.
I walked out onto the private terrace, leaning against the glass railing, looking out at the Hudson River. The cool night air felt refreshing against my warm skin.
Footsteps sounded behind me. Adrian stepped up to the railing, standing close beside me.
"Are you okay?" he asked gently.
"I'm just thinking about how fast everything changed," I said softly, looking up at him. "A week ago, I was just a single mom struggling to balance work and childcare. Now... I'm standing in a billionaire penthouse, fighting for an empire."
"You don't have to fight alone anymore, Clara," Adrian said softly. He turned toward me, taking both of my hands in his. "I started this to protect Julian's legacy. But over the last few days, watching you, seeing how fierce and wonderful you are..."
He paused, searching my eyes.
"What is it, Adrian?" I whispered, my heart fluttering wildly.
May you like
"I'm falling in love with you, Clara," he said simply, his voice rich with sincere emotion. "Not because you are Julian's past, but because you are everything I want in my future."
Before I could reply, he leaned down and gently pressed his lips to mine.
