Chapter 24 - The Backyard ExcavationWith the federal marshals securing our home and the evidence safely transferred to federal custody, Julian and I spent the evening reviewing the contents of the leather pouch we retrieved from Chattanooga.

Inside was a series of handwritten journals belonging to my late father, detailing every corrupt transaction my mother had forced him into over a thirty-year marriage. But tucked into the very back of the final journal was something entirely unexpected: a folded blueprint of our own suburban Nashville house, dated twenty-five years ago.

A specific section of the backyard deck—right where the old wooden boards used to sit before I poured our brand-new concrete patio—was circled in thick red ink with the word: VAULT-B.

I stared at the blueprint on the kitchen island, a cold realization dawning on me.

“Julian,” I said slowly, pointing at the blueprint. “When I poured the new concrete patio last week, I thought I was burying the past. But according to these architectural notes, there’s an underground drainage and secure storage compartment built directly beneath where the old foundation pillars stood.”

Julian’s eyes widened. “Your mother didn’t just use the house as a residence; she used it as a physical drop-off point for contraband documents before she transferred them offshore.”

“And I poured three tons of solid concrete right over top of it,” I muttered.

“Which means,” Julian added, “if there’s physical evidence still down there in that hidden compartment, it’s sealed under your brand-new patio.”

I looked out the kitchen window toward the moonlit backyard where the smooth, gray concrete patio gleamed softly in the dark.

“Looks like I’m going to have to break my own patio,” I said grimly, reaching for a heavy sledgehammer in the garage.
