Chapter 26 - The Capsule’s SecretJulian and I carried the heavy military ammunition case back into the kitchen, placing it carefully on the granite island. The metal casing was sealed tight with rubber gaskets, keeping out moisture and decay for decades.

Using a flathead screwdriver, I pried open the heavy steel latches.

Hiss.

A small puff of pressurized air escaped as the lid popped open. Inside, resting on a bed of yellowed foam padding, was a treasure trove of physical history: original audio cassette tapes, signed corporate stock certificates, and a sealed envelope addressed in my father’s familiar handwriting: To My Children.

I carefully picked up the envelope and broke the wax seal. Inside was a handwritten letter.

“If you are reading this, it means I am gone, and Clara or Connor has finally uncovered the truth. Your mother built an empire of fear, but she used my signature to do it. The enclosed cassette tapes contain the unedited recordings of every board meeting where she plotted to seize control of the family trust through intimidation and fraud. I was a coward for staying silent, but I pray these recordings give you the strength to finish what I never could.”

Julian reached into the case and pulled out three vintage microcassette tapes, labeling each one with dates from the late nineties.

“This isn't just evidence for a civil trial anymore,” Julian said, his voice dropping to a whisper. “This is a federal RICO indictment on a silver platter.”

“And Marcus Vance’s office is trying to bury it,” I added, looking at the tapes. “Which means we cannot give these tapes to local authorities. We need to hand them directly to the United States Attorney General’s field office in downtown Nashville before the sun comes up.”
