Chapter 44 - The Zurich Ledger

We couldn't go to the Adirondacks. If Evelyn had compromised Julian's vehicle, she likely knew about the off-grid cabin. We were entirely exposed, carrying a terrified child, and running out of time. The midnight deadline Thorne had given me was rapidly approaching.
"We need to change vehicles," Julian said, pacing the abandoned parking garage. "I know a guy who runs a chop shop two miles from here. He owes me his life. We can get a clean car."
"Do it," I agreed.
While Julian made the encrypted call, Amy stepped out of the car, carrying a now-sleeping Frederick. She looked at me, her face illuminated by the pale moonlight filtering through the cracked concrete ceiling.
"Who is Evelyn working for?" Amy asked, her voice eerily calm.
"If she's working for Marcus Thorne, it means the political syndicate we thought we destroyed is actively rebuilding itself," I explained, running a hand over my face. "Thorne isn't just a mercenary. He's a cleaner for the elite. If he gets his hands on the Zurich Ledger, he won't just destroy the evidence; he will use it to blackmail every politician on that list into absolute submission."
Amy stared at the GPS tracker I had crushed under my boot.
"What exactly is on that drive, David?" she asked. "You told me it was an insurance policy. But people don't dangle federal prosecutors from cranes over an insurance policy."
I looked into the eyes of the woman I loved, knowing that the honest foundation I craved was impossible as long as I held this secret.
"It's a digital map," I confessed quietly. "It tracks billions of dollars in illegal campaign contributions routed through offshore shell companies. But that's not the worst part. The ledger contains highly classified video files. Blackmail material on two sitting senators and a federal judge. It proves they authorized the assassination of political rivals to protect their corporate interests."
Amy physically recoiled, her hand covering her mouth.
"You kept a hit list?" she breathed in horror. "David, you kept a list of murders in our lives?"
"I kept the only thing that made us too dangerous to kill!" I argued, my voice cracking with desperation.
"And now it’s the only reason we are being hunted," she replied, her eyes welling with tears. "We have to destroy it."
May you like
"No," a voice echoed from the shadows.
Julian stepped back into the light, holding his phone. "We don't destroy it. We use it. We retrieve the ledger, and we use it to buy our lives back."
