Chapter 28 - The Underground MoleThe federal building in downtown Nashville was quiet at 4:00 AM. The night shift security guards recognized Julian from his previous federal casework, and within minutes, we were ushered into the private office of Special Agent-in-Charge Miller of the DOJ.
Agent Miller, a tall, imposing man with piercing gray eyes, listened in silence as we laid out the contents of the military case, played the microcassette recordings, and presented Sarah’s signed affidavit regarding Assistant DA Marcus Vance.
When we finished, Miller leaned back in his leather chair, tapping a pen against his desk.
“You realize what this means, Mr. Bennett,” Miller said slowly. “If Assistant DA Vance is dirty, he’s been coordinating leaks from inside our own justice system to protect your mother’s hidden assets.”
“Which explains how she knew we were investigating Vanguard Holdings,” Julian added. “Vance has been feeding her legal strategy while acting as her backdoor agent.”
Miller nodded grimly. “We’ve suspected a leak in the district attorney’s office for six months, but we never had proof until now. These tapes and documents change everything. We’re going to set a trap.”
“What kind of trap?” I asked.

“A controlled sting,” Miller replied, pulling a secure burner phone from his desk drawer. “We let Vance think his cover is still secure. We feed him false information that a secondary offshore account in the Cayman Islands is about to be seized tomorrow morning. If he reaches out to your mother’s defense team or tries to access the Vanguard funds himself, we catch him red-handed accepting a bribe on federal wire.”
