Chapter 35 - The Open HorizonThe sun dipped below the distant tree line, leaving the Nashville sky in a wash of deep indigo and twilight blue.

Inside the house, I could hear Amy singing a soft lullaby as she put Frederick to bed, her voice floating gently through the open kitchen window. Julian was stopping by in ten minutes for our weekly Sunday dinner, bringing takeout from our favorite local spot downtown.

I stood there on the patio, hands in my pockets, breathing in the crisp winter air.

People often ask how a person survives a storm that was engineered to destroy them from the inside out. For a long time, I thought survival meant fighting fire with fire, matching cruelty with cunning, and building walls high enough to keep the world out.

I was wrong.
