Chapter 53 - The Press Release

|
I hit the ground floor lobby at a full, desperate sprint, my legs burning with lactic acid, my lungs screaming for oxygen.
Julian was waiting just outside the chain-link fence in the idling, heavily dented silver minivan. He threw the passenger door open as I vaulted over the broken fence, diving headfirst into the vehicle.
"Go! Go! Go!" I roared, slamming the door shut.
Julian slammed his foot on the accelerator. The tires shrieked violently against the asphalt, burning rubber as we launched away from the abandoned construction site, disappearing rapidly into the labyrinth of the dark city streets.
"Are you hit?!" Julian yelled, keeping his eyes glued to the rearview mirror.
"I'm fine!" I gasped, checking the bullet tear in my jacket. "I'm clean. Did they evacuate the hotel?"
"I checked the feed before I killed the lights," Julian confirmed, his chest heaving. "Thorne's men left the building. Amy and Frederick are completely safe."
I slumped back into the passenger seat, closing my eyes, feeling an overwhelming, crushing wave of adrenaline finally beginning to recede. We had survived. We had actually walked into the lion's den and walked out breathing.
I pulled my smartphone from my pocket. The screen was cracked from my violent tumble down the concrete stairs, but it was still functioning.
The digital timer on the dead man's switch application was glowing a menacing, bright red.

"David," Julian asked quietly, glancing at the glowing screen. "Are you going to enter the override code?"
I stared at the ticking numbers. I thought about the sheer terror I had felt watching Amy cower in the bathtub. I thought about the mercenary pointing a gun at my chest on a freezing, exposed rooftop. I thought about the honest foundation I had promised to build my new life upon.
You cannot build an honest foundation on top of buried secrets.
"No," I whispered, a profound sense of absolute peace settling over my chaotic mind.
I didn't enter the code. I simply sat there, watching the red numbers tick down to absolute zero.
00:00:00
The screen flashed a brilliant, blinding white. A tiny notification popped up in the center of the cracked glass.
Data Dump Executed. 50 Emails Sent Successfully.
