Chapter 41 - The Truth About Thorne

|

I found them exactly where I told them to be. Amy was huddled in the cast-iron bathtub, her arms wrapped fiercely around Frederick, who was blissfully unaware, playing with a plastic dinosaur.

When she saw my face, she broke. I dropped my weapon on the vanity counter and pulled them both into a crushing embrace. She was trembling violently, her tears soaking through my shirt.

"He's gone," I whispered repeatedly into her hair. "You're safe. I've got you."

After I had cleared the house and locked every deadbolt, we sat in the kitchen. The warm, glowing light from the previous night felt like a cruel joke now. I made two cups of strong coffee, sat across from my wife, and knew I had to shatter the honest foundation I had promised her.

"You lied to me," Amy said, her eyes red but remarkably sharp. She wasn't just a victim; she was the smartest woman I knew. "You told me the feds wiped our slates clean. You told me there was no leverage left."

"I lied," I admitted, refusing to look away from her accusing gaze. "When we cut the immunity deal with the Attorney General, I handed over everything regarding the syndicate. But there was one encrypted drive I kept hidden. The Zurich Ledger. It contains the offshore routing numbers and the true identities of the politicians who funded the syndicate's original rise to power."

Amy stared at me, sheer disbelief washing over her face. "Why? Why would you keep a nuclear bomb in our lives?"

"Because I didn't trust the government!" I shot back, frustration leaking into my voice. "If the political winds shifted, if they decided to revoke our immunity to protect a senator, I needed an insurance policy to ensure we couldn't be touched."

"And instead, you brought the monsters right to our doorstep," she whispered, looking toward the ceiling where Frederick was sleeping.

"The man who is coming for it... his name is Marcus Thorne," I explained, leaning forward. "He's a ghost. A mercenary who cleans up political messes. He strung up the federal prosecutor who brokered our deal last night."

Amy closed her eyes, taking a deep, shuddering breath. When she opened them, the fear was gone, replaced by a terrifying, unyielding resolve.

"We are not victims, David," she said, her voice like steel. "You brought this storm back. Now, we are going to finish it. Where is the ledger?"
