Chapter 32 - October ArrivesOctober 12th arrived with the crisp, golden chill of autumn settling over Nashville. The trees lining our suburban street were bursting with brilliant shades of orange and red, and the air carried the clean, refreshing scent of fallen leaves.

There were no media vans parked outside our driveway. No flashing police lights. No hostile relatives pounding on our door.

Inside the house, Amy was making pancakes while little Frederick chased our golden retriever around the living room, giggling uncontrollably.

I sat at the kitchen island, drinking my coffee, looking out through the window at the newly repaired concrete patio in the backyard. The ugly scar where I had broken the slab to retrieve the vault had been professionally repoured and smoothed over, blending seamlessly into the rest of the patio.

My phone chimed on the granite counter. It was a text message from Julian:

“Judge Harrison just gaveled the final plea hearing. Your mother received twenty-five years without parole. No appeals. It’s officially over, brother.”

I stared at the screen, letting out a breath I felt like I had been holding for three long years.

The weight was gone. The shadows were lifted.

I walked over to Amy, wrapping my arms around her waist from behind as she flipped a pancake at the stove. She leaned back against me, smiling as she turned her head to kiss my cheek.

“It’s finished, isn’t it?” she asked softly.

“It’s finished,” I whispered.
