Part 2: The Fifteen-Minute Freeze

The silence that followed my call to the dispatcher was absolute. The background hum of the refrigerator and the distant sirens of the city below seemed to amplify the suffocating tension building inside the room. Daniel stood entirely frozen, his mouth slightly parted, his eyes darting from my phone to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the glittering skyline.

"Your apartment?" Gloria finally countered, her shrill voice cracking as her arms crossed defensively over her royal blue dress. "Daniel, tell me she’s lying. This is your penthouse. You told me you purchased this property with the corporate bonus from the tech acquisition last spring!"

Daniel didn't answer his mother. He couldn't. A deep, sickly flush of crimson crept up his neck, creeping past his collar as he stared down at me.

"You didn't," he whispered, his voice losing every ounce of its previous bravado. "Chloe, you wouldn't do this. We're married. Whatever happens between us stays inside these walls. Cancel the call. Tell them it was a misunderstanding."

"A misunderstanding?" I pressed my palm harder against my fracturing ribs, a sharp gasp of agony catching in my throat as I forced myself to stand upright against the marble table. "You broke my bones, Daniel. You stood there and let your mother talk about my fertility like I was a broken appliance, and then you struck me because your mistress is carrying the child you blamed me for not having."

"She's a gold digger!" Gloria screamed, stepping between us, her pearl necklace rattling against her throat as her elite facade completely disintegrated. "Daniel, call our attorneys! Call the managing partner at the firm! She cannot evict us from our own family home!"

"It isn't a family home, Gloria," I said, my voice dropping into an icy, unyielding register. I reached across the table and picked up my laptop, flipping it open to display the live dashboard of the home security system. "Every single angle of that assault was recorded in 4K resolution. The impact, the punch, your applause—it’s already uploaded to an encrypted cloud server that my personal family lawyer accesses."

Daniel took an aggressive step forward, his fists clenching at his sides as if his old instincts were trying to override the sudden terror. "Delete it, Chloe. I swear to God, if you ruin my standing at the firm with a domestic charge—"

"You ruined yourself the second you rolled up your sleeves," I cut him off, not flinching an inch as the distinct, rhythmic red and blue lights began to flash against the glass windows from the street forty floors below.

The elevators in the private lobby chimed. The fifteen minutes were up.
