Part 3: The Eviction of the Empire

The heavy double doors of the penthouse didn't open softly; they were pushed inward by four uniform officers from the Dallas Police Department, their flashlights cutting through the warm, ambient lighting of the dining room.
"Step away from the lady, sir," the lead officer commanded, his hand resting firmly on his utility belt as his eyes immediately took in my bruised face and the defensive posture I was holding against the table.
"Officers, thank goodness you're here!" Gloria cried out, attempting to push past them with an air of practiced authority. "This woman is having a psychological episode. She attacked my son, she broke our porcelain, and now she's attempting to falsely accuse him—"
"Ma'am, sit down and keep your mouth shut," the second officer snapped, his voice leaving entirely no room for negotiation as he stepped directly into Daniel’s personal space. "Ma'am, are you the one who placed the emergency call?"
"I am," I spoke, my breathing labored as the adrenaline began to fade, leaving behind a white-hot agony in my chest. "The property is entirely in my name. The deed and utility accounts are registered under my maiden name, Chloe Bennett. That man is my husband, Daniel Brooks. He struck me across the face five minutes ago, forcing me into the table."
Daniel tried to smooth his hair back, a pathetic, desperate attempt to regain his professional composure. "Officer, look at the context here. My wife has been under an immense amount of emotional stress. It was a domestic dispute, a mutual escalation—"
"We have the video footage, Officer," I interrupted, turning the laptop screen toward the lead policeman. The crisp, undeniable playback of Daniel’s palm cracking across my face filled the small screen, followed clearly by the sound of Gloria’s laughter and her shouting “Get out of my house!”
The officer’s expression went completely dark. He looked up from the screen straight into Daniel’s pale face. "Turn around and put your hands behind your back, sir."
"No! You can't arrest him! Do you know who his family is?!" Gloria shrieked, lunging forward as the metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the open floor plan. "Daniel! Call the senator! Call anyone!"
"Daniel Brooks, you are under arrest for domestic assault causing grievous bodily harm," the officer recited coldly, pinning Daniel against the very Italian chairs he had bragged about buying.
As they dragged him toward the private elevator, Daniel turned his head back toward me, his face completely hollowed out by fear, realizing that his career, his mistress, and his reputation were vanishing into the back of a police cruiser.
Gloria stood in the center of my living room, her expensive silk dress looking disheveled, her jaw trembling as she looked around the empty, cavernous penthouse. The illusion of her dynasty had been completely erased in a quarter of an hour.
"You're a monster," she whispered to me, her voice shaking with venom.

I walked over to the front door, holding it open as the medics finally arrived with a stretcher for my ribs. I looked at her one last time, a cold, victorious smile touching my lips despite the pain.
"I might be a monster, Gloria," I said softly, "but I'm a monster who owns the building. Get out of my house."
