Chapter 1 - The Illusion of a Home

Chapter 1: The Illusion of a Home
|
Nora had always believed that the universe owed her a quiet, simple kind of happiness. Growing up in the sterile, unforgiving halls of a state-run orphanage, she had never known the warmth of a mother’s embrace or the protective shadow of a father. Her childhood was a series of hand-me-down clothes, cold dinners, and the constant, gnawing feeling of being entirely unwanted. She had no memories of her past before the age of four, only a vague, hazy recollection of a warm summer day and the sweet taste of vanilla ice cream. Everything else was a blank canvas painted with the dull gray of institutional life.
When she met Arthur, she thought her life was finally taking a turn toward the light. He was charming, well-dressed, and possessed an easy smile that made her feel seen for the first time in her twenty-two years of existence. Arthur came from a wealthy family, the kind of lineage that boasted sprawling mansions and generational wealth. To Nora, a girl who owned nothing but a worn-out suitcase and a heart full of desperate hope, Arthur felt like a prince stepping out of a fairy tale.
“You don’t ever have to feel alone again, Nora,” Arthur had whispered to her under the starlight on the night he proposed.
“Are you sure your family will accept me?” she had asked, her voice trembling with the deep-seated insecurities of her past. “I don’t have a pedigree. I don’t even know my real last name.”

“They will love you because I love you,” he promised, kissing her forehead.
But promises made in the dark rarely survive the harsh light of dawn. Nora walked into the grand, intimidating marble foyer of the family’s estate on her wedding day, hoping she was finally stepping into a home. She didn't realize that she was merely trading the cold walls of an orphanage for the gilded, suffocating bars of a cage. The illusion of a loving family would not even last the week.
