Chapter 8 - The Suitcase on the Marble

|
Nora moved through the mansion like a ghost, her vision blurred by an endless stream of silent tears. She carried Liam in one arm, his small body resting heavily against her chest, while she used her free hand to hurriedly shove her meager belongings into the same worn suitcase she had brought from the orphanage years ago. She didn't take any of the expensive dresses or jewelry Arthur had purchased for public appearances. She only took what truly belonged to her.
She packed Liam’s clothes, a few blankets, and his favorite small plush bear. Her heart felt as though it were physically cracking inside her chest. The terrifying reality of being homeless with a sick, three-month-old infant was setting in, but remaining in this house of horrors was no longer an option.
Nora dragged the heavy suitcase down the grand sweeping staircase, her steps echoing loudly in the cavernous, silent foyer. She reached the bottom step just as the heavy oak front doors opened, revealing the sweeping circular driveway outside.
Eleanor was standing by the entrance, her arms crossed over her chest, a look of profound satisfaction on her face.
“Make it quick. I want you off the property before the cars arrive,” Eleanor snapped.
“I need to call a cab,” Nora said, her voice shaking as she adjusted Liam in her arms.
“You have legs. Walk to the gate,” Eleanor replied cruelly.
As Nora bent down to grasp the handle of her suitcase, Eleanor stepped forward and deliberately kicked the bag. The cheap latch, already worn from years of use, snapped under the force. The suitcase burst open, spilling Nora’s faded clothes and Liam’s tiny, colorful ones all over the pristine, imported marble floor.

“Look at this trash,” Eleanor scoffed, looking down at the scattered belongings. “Pick it up and get out. You are ruining the aesthetic of my home.”
Nora dropped to her knees, sobbing openly now, desperately trying to gather her baby’s clothes while balancing Liam in her lap.
