Chapter 16 - The Slap That Echoed

|
Before Arthur could utter another pathetic excuse, the President moved with shocking speed.
He raised his hand and brought it across Arthur’s face with devastating force.
SLAP!
The sharp, cracking sound echoed violently throughout the cavernous foyer, bouncing off the high ceilings and crystal chandeliers. The sheer power of the blow sent Arthur completely off balance. He loạng choạng backward, tripping over his own feet, and crashed into an antique table, sending a priceless vase shattering to the floor beside him.
Arthur lay on the ground, clutching his rapidly swelling, bright red cheek, a look of absolute shock and horror on his face. He had never been struck in his entire pampered life.
Eleanor shrieked, taking a step toward her son, but a single, lethal glare from the President froze her completely in her tracks.
The President stood over Arthur, pointing a finger directly at the coward’s face. Every word he spoke was laced with venom and absolute disgust.
“You did not need to know she was my daughter to protect her!” the President roared, his voice shaking the very foundations of the house. “She is your wife! That baby crying on the floor is your son! And you stood there like a pathetic coward, watching your mother push her to the ground while your child was in her arms!”
Arthur cowered on the floor, weeping silently, utterly humiliated in front of the Secret Service, the government delegation, and his own mother.
“A real man protects his family against the world,” the President spat, his disgust palpable. “You threw yours to the wolves because you thought no one would care. You thought she was weak. You thought she was alone.”

The President leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper.
“She is not alone anymore.”
