Chapter 17 - The Mother-in-Law's Plea

|

Eleanor, realizing that her entire empire was burning to the ground before her very eyes, desperately tried to salvage the unsalvageable. She hurriedly stepped forward, her hands raised in a placating gesture, completely abandoning her usual haughty arrogance. She plastered a fake, terrified smile onto her pale face.

“Thưa ngài Tổng thống… Mr. President, please, please calm down,” Eleanor begged, her voice trembling violently. “This is a terrible, terrible misunderstanding. Tensions have just been so high because of the business. We love Nora. We do! This was just a minor family argument that got completely out of hand…”

The President slowly turned his head to look at Eleanor. His eyes were like twin glaciers, entirely devoid of mercy or warmth.

“A misunderstanding?” he repeated softly.

He walked over to where the broken suitcase lay on the floor. He slowly bent down and picked up a tiny, white baby onesie. It was dirty now, stained by the spilled milk and the dust from the marble floor. He held it up in front of Eleanor’s face.

“You called my daughter a burden,” the President stated coldly. “You threw my grandson’s clothes onto the floor like garbage. You physically pushed a mother and her sick infant onto hard stone. And you have the audacity to look me in the eye and call that a family misunderstanding?”

Eleanor choked on her words. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish suffocating on dry land, unable to form a single coherent defense against the sheer magnitude of her own cruelty.

“You thought she was a parasite draining your precious resources,” the President continued, stepping closer to her, forcing Eleanor to back away until she hit the cold stone of the grand staircase railing. “Let me show you exactly what it looks like when a family loses its resources.”
