Chapter 14 - The Frozen Spectators

Everyone standing in the grand foyer was entirely paralyzed. The scene unfolding before them was so profoundly shocking that it defied all logic and reason. The Secret Service agents stood like statues, maintaining the perimeter but watching their stoic leader weep on the floor.
But it was Arthur and Eleanor whose reactions were the most violent.
Eleanor looked as though she had been physically struck by lightning. Her face was entirely drained of blood, turning a sickly, ashen gray. Her mouth hung open, but no sound came out. The girl she had abused, starved of affection, insulted, and physically pushed to the ground just moments ago was not a penniless orphan. She was the sole biological daughter of the President of the nation. She was the most powerful heiress in the country.
Arthur’s knees began to visibly shake. He backed away slightly, his mind racing to comprehend the sheer magnitude of the catastrophe he had just allowed to happen. The massive government bailout his company desperately needed to survive was entirely controlled by the man currently holding the wife Arthur had just abandoned to the marble floor.
“This… this can’t be real,” Eleanor whispered to herself, her perfectly manicured hands trembling uncontrollably. “It’s a mistake. It has to be a mistake.”
But the President’s reaction was not a mistake. The genetic resemblance, now that they were face-to-face, was undeniably striking. The strong jawline, the deep brown eyes, the quiet resilience—it was all there.

The President slowly pulled back from Nora. He looked down at the bleeding scrape on her elbow. He looked at the shattered suitcase, the scattered baby clothes, and the terrified, feverish infant in her arms.
When the President finally stood up, the overwhelming sorrow in his eyes vanished, instantly replaced by a cold, calculating, and absolutely terrifying rage.
