Chapter 11 - The Black Motorcade

|
Before Eleanor could make good on her threat to call security, a low, heavy rumbling sound vibrated through the open front doors. It was the distinct, synchronized hum of multiple high-powered engines approaching up the long, winding driveway.
Arthur rushed to the window, his face draining of all remaining color.
“They’re here,” Arthur gasped, genuine panic in his voice. “Mother, the delegation is here. And… my god, there are police escorts. The black SUVs… it’s the presidential motorcade!”
Eleanor’s cruel demeanor instantly vanished, replaced by sheer, unadulterated panic.
“The President? Here? Personally?” she hissed, frantically smoothing her dress and fixing her hair. “Hide her! Drag her into the coat closet! They cannot see this!”
But it was far too late. The heavy tires crunched against the gravel just outside the open doors. The doors of the black SUVs swung open simultaneously. A dozen Secret Service agents in dark suits poured out, rapidly securing the perimeter with practiced, intimidating efficiency.
Arthur and Eleanor froze in the center of the foyer, utterly paralyzed by the overwhelming display of power.
From the center vehicle, an older man stepped out. He was tall, with distinguished silver hair, a sharp, tailored suit, and an aura of absolute, undeniable authority. It was President Richard Sterling. He walked toward the open doors of the mansion, flanked by his chief of staff and several stern-looking agents.
He had come to personally inspect the company asking for a massive government bailout, a routine check for such a large sum of taxpayer money. But as he stepped through the grand entryway, his eyes immediately bypassed Arthur and Eleanor.

The President’s gaze fell directly onto the marble floor. He saw the shattered suitcase, the scattered baby clothes, and a young, battered woman lying on the ground, bleeding and sobbing while shielding a screaming infant.
The entire foyer plunged into a suffocating, deathly silence.
