Chapter 2 - The Cold Reception

The reality of Nora’s new life set in almost immediately after the honeymoon. The sprawling mansion, with its high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and imported marble floors, was beautiful, but it lacked any semblance of warmth. The true ruler of this estate was not Arthur, nor his late father, but his mother, Eleanor. Eleanor was a woman carved from ice, with sharp features, impeccable posture, and eyes that constantly evaluated the net worth of everyone in her line of sight.
From the very first morning Nora sat at the massive mahogany dining table, Eleanor made her disdain excruciatingly clear.
“I hope you understand, Nora, that marrying into this family requires a certain… elevation of character,” Eleanor said, delicately sipping her black tea without looking at her new daughter-in-law.
“I am willing to learn whatever is necessary, Mother,” Nora replied softly, trying to offer a polite, eager smile.
“Do not call me Mother,” Eleanor snapped, her voice slicing through the quiet dining room like a well-sharpened blade. “You may call me Madam, or you may call me Mrs. Sterling. You were brought into this house because my son had a momentary lapse in judgment, a tragic infatuation with a charity case. But do not mistake his pity for your permanence.”
Nora’s heart dropped into her stomach. She instinctively looked across the table at Arthur, silently begging him to intervene, to defend the woman he had sworn to protect just weeks prior.
Arthur simply cleared his throat, avoiding her gaze entirely.

“Now, Mother, let’s just eat in peace. I have a very busy day at the firm,” he muttered, picking up his newspaper to shield his face from the tension.
In that single, agonizing moment, Nora realized the devastating truth. She was not a beloved wife. She was an unwanted guest, an embarrassing blemish on their perfect family portrait. And the man who was supposed to be her shield was entirely too frightened of his mother to ever stand in the way of her cruelty.
