Chapter 7 - The Breaking Point

|

The breaking point arrived on a Tuesday morning. It was a bleak, overcast day, the kind that promised heavy rain and relentless gloom. The tension in the house was palpable. A major delegation from the capital, including representatives from the presidential financial committee, was scheduled to finalize the massive investment deal later that afternoon. Arthur was a nervous wreck, pacing the halls in a tailored suit, barking orders at the trembling staff.

Liam had been fussy all night, battling a mild fever. Nora was exhausted, her eyes lined with dark, bruised shadows from lack of sleep. She was in the kitchen, desperately trying to warm a bottle of milk, when Eleanor marched in, her face twisted in absolute fury.

“Make that child stop crying immediately!” Eleanor demanded, pointing a manicured finger at Nora.

“He’s sick, Madam. I am doing my best,” Nora pleaded, testing the temperature of the milk on her wrist.

“Your best is utterly inadequate! Do you realize who is coming here today? The highest financial authorities in the nation! If they walk into this estate and hear a squalling infant and see a disheveled, pathetic woman wandering the halls, they will think Arthur runs a madhouse, not a corporate empire!”

“He is just a baby! He doesn't know any better!”

“But you do!” Eleanor shouted, stepping forward and violently slapping the bottle out of Nora’s hand.

The glass shattered against the expensive tile floor, splashing warm milk across Nora’s bare feet. Liam, startled by the loud crash, began to wail even louder, his small face turning red with distress.

“Get out,” Eleanor commanded, her voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly whisper. “I have tolerated your wretched presence for far too long. Pack your miserable little bags and get out of my house before the delegation arrives.”

Nora stared at the shattered glass, then looked up at the monster standing before her. She was entirely out of fight.

“Fine,” Nora whispered, tears finally breaking free. “I’ll leave.”
