Chapter 3 - The Silent Sufferer

|
Months bled into a grueling year, and Nora’s existence within the mansion became a masterclass in silent suffering. She was the mistress of the house in name only. In practice, she was treated with less respect than the hired help. Eleanor took profound pleasure in reminding Nora of her origins, assigning her demeaning tasks, criticizing her table manners, and isolating her from any social events.
“You are not to attend the charity gala tonight,” Eleanor instructed one evening, adjusting a diamond necklace in the hallway mirror. “Your lack of education and refinement will only embarrass Arthur in front of our investors.”
“But Arthur asked me to go,” Nora whispered, clutching the fabric of her simple evening gown.
“Arthur says many things he does not mean. Stay in your room. Do not make a scene,” Eleanor commanded before sweeping out the front door.
When Arthur returned home late that night, smelling faintly of expensive champagne, Nora confronted him in the darkness of their bedroom.
“Why didn't you stand up for me? Why didn't you tell her I was supposed to be your date?” Nora asked, tears of profound frustration stinging her eyes.
“Nora, please. Not tonight,” Arthur sighed, loosening his silk tie with a look of intense annoyance. “My mother knows the social dynamics of our business better than you do. She’s just trying to protect the company’s image. You know how fragile the restructuring deal is right now.”
“I am your wife, Arthur! I am not a threat to your company’s image!”

“You’re acting hysterical. Just learn to compromise. Is it really so hard to just keep your head down and keep the peace?”
He turned his back to her, slipping into bed and turning off the bedside lamp. Nora stood alone in the dark, the heavy silence of the room pressing against her chest. She was completely isolated. The man she loved was a coward, and the home she desperately wanted was a battleground where she was entirely unarmed.
