Chapter 20 - The True Family

The ride to the capital was a blur of exhaustion, tears, and overwhelming relief. Nora sat in the back of the heavily armored SUV, wrapped tightly in her father’s warm jacket. The President sat beside her, refusing to let go of her hand for even a single second. Every few minutes, he would look at her, fresh tears brimming in his eyes, as if terrified she might vanish into thin air if he blinked.
When they finally arrived at the presidential estate, Nora was immediately ushered into a massive, warm suite. The White House medical staff was already waiting. They gently treated her bruised shoulder and hip, and a top pediatrician thoroughly examined little Liam, confirming that his fever was mild and easily treated.
Later that evening, after Liam had finally fallen into a deep, peaceful sleep in a beautiful mahogany crib, Nora sat on the edge of her plush bed. The door opened softly, and the President walked in. He had traded his suit for a comfortable sweater, looking less like a world leader and entirely like a loving father.
He sat down beside her, handing her a cup of warm tea.
“I have a lot to make up for, Nora,” he said softly, looking at his sleeping grandson. “Eighteen years is a long time. But I promise you, as long as I have breath in my lungs, no one will ever hurt you or this boy again.”
Nora leaned her head against his shoulder, closing her eyes. She felt the steady, calming beat of his heart. The terrible nightmare of the orphanage, the cruelty of Eleanor, and the cowardice of Arthur felt like they belonged to a different lifetime.

“I know, Dad,” Nora whispered into the quiet, safe room.
For the first time in her life, she wasn't just surviving. She was finally, truly, home.
