Chapter 4 - A Glimmer in the Dark

The discovery of her pregnancy should have been a moment of overwhelming joy. For Nora, a girl who had spent her entire life devoid of blood relatives, the idea of having a child—a piece of her own flesh and blood—felt like a miracle. When she saw the two pink lines on the test, she fell to her knees on the cold bathroom tiles and wept, not out of sorrow, but out of a fierce, protective love for the tiny life growing inside her.

She prepared a special dinner that evening, hoping against hope that this news would finally bridge the massive chasm growing between her and Arthur. She hoped a grandchild would soften Eleanor’s heart.

When Nora gently placed the small gift box containing the positive test on the table, Arthur opened it and froze.

“Are you sure?” he asked, his voice entirely devoid of the excitement she had prayed for.

“Yes. I went to the doctor this morning. I’m ten weeks along,” Nora said, her smile faltering as she watched his pale face.

Eleanor snatched the test from his hand, her eyes narrowing with absolute disgust.

“How incredibly inconvenient,” Eleanor hissed, tossing the plastic stick onto the table as if it were toxic. “Arthur is in the middle of the most critical financial quarter of his life. The company is bleeding money, and now we have to deal with this? Another mouth to feed? Another distraction?”

“It is your grandchild,” Nora said, her voice shaking with a sudden, uncharacteristic burst of anger.

“It is a burden,” Eleanor corrected coldly. “Just like its mother. A parasite draining resources we cannot afford to lose.”

Arthur did not look at Nora. He simply buried his face in his hands.

“Mother is right, Nora. The timing couldn't be worse. The investors are pulling back. If this restructuring deal fails, we lose everything. I can’t handle a baby right now.”

Nora instinctively placed a protective hand over her flat stomach. In that moment, she realized she and her unborn child were entirely on their own.
