Chapter 2 - The Ejection of the Pretender

The echo of Roberto’s command bounced off the high vaulted ceilings of the foyer, ringing with an finality that left zero room for negotiation.

For three seconds, absolute silence gripped the room. Vanessa stared at him, her mouth slightly open, her carefully curated veneer of sophisticated grace crumbling completely under the weight of utter disbelief.

“You’re... you’re firing me?” Vanessa laughed—a high-pitched, hysterical sound that lacked any genuine humor. “You’re throwing me out over a spilled glass of juice and a couple of heated words with a stubborn brat and an old servant? Are you out of your mind, Roberto? Who do you think you are? You think you can just discard me like a broken piece of furniture?”

“I am not discarding a piece of furniture, Vanessa,” Roberto said, his voice dropping back into that terrifying, cold register. “I am removing a venomous parasite from my home. And you have exactly thirty minutes before my private security detail escorts you off the property.”

Vanessa’s expression twisted instantly from pleading panic into vicious, unadulterated rage. The mask was entirely gone, revealing the calculating, ambitious social climber hiding beneath the designer clothes.

“You arrogant, ungrateful bastard!” Vanessa screamed, her voice losing all its melodic refinement. “You think you’re untouchable just because you sit on top of a mountain of money! Without me, you’re just a grieving widower hiding in a cave with a blind child! I know your secrets, Roberto! I know your corporate contacts, I know your weak spots, and I swear to God, if you throw me out like this, I will tear your empire down to the ground and make sure you never see a dime of your precious fortune again!”

Roberto didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice to match her shrieking. He simply reached into his suit jacket, pulled out his phone, and tapped the speed-dial icon for estate security.

“Marcus,” Roberto said calmly into the speaker as soon as the head of security answered. “Bring three men to the main foyer immediately. Escort Mrs. Santos to the guest wing, supervise her packing every single item she brought into this house, and make sure she leaves the front gates by 9:45 PM. If she resists, call county police for trespassing.”

“Right away, Mr. Santos,” Marcus’s crisp, professional voice replied instantly.

Vanessa’s eyes bulged with pure hatred. She lunged forward as if she wanted to claw his face, but before she could take two steps, heavy footsteps echoed from the hallway as Marcus and two uniformed security operatives appeared, stepping firmly between Roberto and Vanessa.

“This isn't over, Roberto!” Vanessa shrieked as Marcus gently but firmly gripped her arm, turning her toward the grand staircase. “You’ll regret this! You’ll be begging me to come back before the week is out!”

Her furious curses echoed up the stairwell, fading gradually as she was hauled away to pack her belongings.

When the heavy oak front doors finally closed behind her a short time later, the mansion felt entirely different. The suffocating, toxic weight that had settled over the rooms for the past year seemed to lift, replaced by a quiet, breathable stillness.

Roberto exhaled a long, shuddering breath he felt like he’d been holding for months. He turned back toward the living room.

María was still kneeling on the rug, gently wiping away the remaining juice with a cloth while keeping a protective, loving hand near Sofía’s knee.

Roberto walked over, knelt down beside them once again, and gently touched María’s shoulder.

“María,” Roberto said softly, his voice thick with emotion. “I am so sorry. I was blind. I was so caught up in trying to buy safety and stability for my daughter that I let a monster right through our front door. If you hadn't stepped in tonight... God, I don't even want to think about what she might have done.”

María looked up, her tired eyes glistening with moisture, and offered a gentle, forgiving smile. Her worn, wrinkled hand covered Roberto’s over her shoulder. “Mr. Santos... the only thing that mattered to me was protecting our little girl. As long as Sofía is safe, nothing else matters.”

Sofía reached out blindly into the air, her small hands brushing against Roberto’s cheek. He caught her fingers instantly, pressing them to his lips and kissing her knuckles.

“Daddy,” Sofía whispered, her voice steady and brave now that the monster was gone. “Is the bad lady really gone forever?”

“Forever, my angel,” Roberto promised, pulling her into his arms and holding her tighter than he ever had before. “And Daddy is never, ever going away again.”
