Chapter 23 - The Velvet Box

|
The autumn rain lashed against the windows of Roberto’s private study, but inside, the room was warm, filled with the rich scent of cedar and old paper.
Roberto sat at his obsidian desk, completely ignoring the stack of foundation reports waiting for his signature. Instead, his full attention was focused on a small, square object resting in the center of his leather blotter.
It was a midnight-blue velvet box.
He reached out and snapped it open. Inside, resting on a bed of white satin, was a flawless, ethically sourced, emerald-cut diamond ring. It was elegant, timeless, and completely unpretentious—exactly like the woman it was intended for.
The heavy oak door creaked open, and Marcus stepped inside, holding a security dossier. The former bodyguard stopped in his tracks, his eyes darting to the velvet box before Roberto could snap it shut.
"Am I interrupting something highly classified, boss?" Marcus asked, a rare, genuine grin spreading across his stoic face.
Roberto let out a long, nervous breath, leaning back in his chair and rubbing his temples.
"I am terrified, Marcus," Roberto admitted, gesturing toward the ring. "I faced down federal indictments, hostile takeovers, and corporate espionage without losing a single hour of sleep. But the thought of asking Elena to marry me makes me feel like I am standing on the edge of a cliff."
Marcus walked over, resting a heavy, reassuring hand on Roberto's shoulder.
"With all due respect, Roberto, you are overthinking this," Marcus said quietly. "That woman stood by you when your entire empire was burning to the ground. She fought the fire with you. She didn't stay because she wanted a ring; she stayed because she loves you. The ring is just a formality."
Roberto looked at the velvet box, the truth of Marcus's words settling deep into his chest, calming the frantic beating of his heart.
"You're right," Roberto agreed, a slow smile finally touching his lips. "I just want it to be perfect. She deserves absolute perfection after everything she has endured."

"She doesn't want perfection, boss," Marcus corrected gently, turning to leave the study. "She just wants you. I'll leave you to plan your strategy."
Roberto picked up the box, slipping it securely into the inner pocket of his suit jacket. It was time to build the ultimate foundation.
