Chapter 21 - The First Day of School

|
The end of summer brought a bittersweet transition to the Hale-Santos estate. For years, Sofía had been educated at home by private tutors, shielded from a world that Roberto had believed was too harsh and unforgiving for a visually impaired child. But as the foundation grew, so did Roberto’s understanding of true independence.
He stood in the grand foyer, holding a small, brightly colored backpack. His heart was hammering against his ribs in a way it never did during corporate mergers. Today was Sofía's first day at the prestigious Oakridge Academy for the Blind, a specialized school they had heavily funded.
Elena walked down the grand staircase, fully dressed in a sharp business suit, smiling as she saw Roberto pacing the marble floor.
"You look like you are about to walk into a hostile negotiation," Elena teased gently, taking the backpack from his tense grip.
"I am terrified, Elena," Roberto admitted, running a hand through his hair. "What if she gets lost in the hallways? What if the other children are cruel? What if the teachers don't understand her specific needs?"
"Roberto, look at me," Elena said, stepping into his personal space and resting her hands on his chest. "We personally vetted every single instructor at that academy. She knows how to use her cane perfectly. You cannot keep her in a glass box forever. She needs to experience the world, even the scary parts, to learn how strong she truly is."
Before Roberto could argue further, Sofía skipped into the foyer, wearing her crisp new school uniform. She had a massive, fearless smile on her face.
"I'm ready, Daddy!" Sofía announced, tapping her cane rhythmically against the floor. "María packed me an extra juice box in case I make a new friend."
Roberto looked at his daughter, realizing that his fear was entirely his own. Sofía wasn't scared; she was absolutely thrilled by the prospect of a new adventure.

"Alright, Captain," Roberto smiled, his anxiety melting into profound pride. "Let's go conquer the first grade."
He took her small hand in his, and together with Elena, they walked out the front door, stepping boldly into the bright, promising morning.
