Chapter 20 - The Anniversary

|

One year had passed since the final gavel fell in the federal courtroom, closing the darkest chapter of Roberto's life.

He didn't mark the occasion with a grand gesture or a somber reflection. He chose to celebrate the profound normalcy he had fought so hard to achieve.

It was a quiet Friday evening. The estate was filled with the savory smell of roasting garlic and tomatoes as María prepared a massive family dinner.

Roberto was in the living room, sitting on the floor with Sofía, attempting to build a complicated, architectural masterpiece out of wooden blocks.

"The tower needs to be taller, Daddy," Sofía instructed, handing him another block. "The princess needs to be able to hear the birds from the top window."

"Structural integrity is critical, Captain," Roberto cautioned playfully, balancing the block precariously on the top tier. "If we build too high without a solid base, the whole thing will collapse."

"Then we make the base stronger," Sofía stated simply, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.

Roberto paused, looking at his daughter. Her innocent wisdom struck a chord deep within him.

Make the base stronger.

He had spent years trying to build an empire on a foundation of ambition, secrecy, and aggressive expansion, and it had nearly destroyed him. Now, his foundation was built on honesty, presence, and love. It was infinitely stronger.

The front door chimed, and Elena walked in, carrying a bottle of sparkling cider and a wide, brilliant smile.

"Dinner is almost ready!" María called from the kitchen.

Roberto stood up, scooping Sofía into his arms, and walked over to greet Elena. He kissed her gently, feeling a deep, resonant peace settle over him.

The storm had passed. The ruins were cleared. And standing in the warm, bright living room of his home, Roberto Santos knew that his true legacy was finally secure.
