Chapter 9 - Shadows in the Rearview Mirror

While peace settled deeply into the Hale-Santos estate, the fallout of the federal prosecution continued to ripple through the legal world.
In a medium-security federal penitentiary three states away, Vanessa sat in the communal cafeteria, staring down at a tray of institutional gray food. The designer clothes, the manicured elegance, and the high-society galas were all distant, mocking memories. Her hair was pulled back into a simple, unstyled band, and her face bore the permanent, hardened lines of bitterness and regret.
She had tried every legal maneuver available to her. She had written frantic letters to her former defense attorneys, begged for appeals, and attempted to bargain with federal prosecutors by offering minor gossip about other corporate players. But no one was listening. To the legal system, she was just another convicted felon doing time for wire fraud, conspiracy, and child endangerment.
Across the room, a prison guard approached her table, tapping a heavy set of keys against the metal surface.
“Santos, V.,” the guard barked monotonously. “Visitor in booth four. Make it snappy; your twenty minutes start now.”
Vanessa blinked in surprise. She had no family left who would speak to her, and her former legal associates had long since blocked her numbers. With a sinking feeling in her stomach, she stood up and followed the guard down the sterile, echoing corridor to the designated visitation glass.
Sitting on the other side of the partition, wearing a simple gray prison jumpsuit, was Arthur Vance.
Vanessa picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver with shaking hands and pressed it to her ear. Arthur did the same on his side, his face twisted into a sneer of pure, venomous contempt.
“Are you happy now, Vanessa?” Arthur’s voice rasped through the static-laced speaker. “Your incompetence blew the entire operation wide open. Because of your pathetic inability to keep your temper in check with a blind child, Roberto’s security team found the secondary network logs within forty-eight hours.”
Vanessa’s eyes flared with sudden, blazing fury. She pressed her face against the glass, her voice shaking with rage as she spoke into her receiver.
“My incompetence?! You’re the one who assured me Roberto was a blind, grieving fool who wouldn't notice anything if I played the domestic martyr! You set me up to take the fall for a syndicate that was already crumbling!”
“We could have owned a multi-billion-dollar empire,” Arthur snarled back, his eyes dark with malice. “Instead, we’re rotting in federal cages while Roberto and his brat live like royalty in that fortress. He won, Vanessa. He completely outplayed us.”
May you like
Vanessa slowly lowered the receiver, her chest heaving as she stared at the man on the other side of the glass. The realization crashed down upon her with crushing finality: there was no escape, no rescue, and no second chance. They had tried to destroy a man’s family for greed, and in the end, their own greed had become their permanent prison.
She dropped the receiver back onto its cradle, turned on her heel without uttering another word, and walked back into the dark corridors of her reality, leaving Arthur shouting silently behind the glass.
