Chapter 3 - The Secret Vault

While Vanessa’s belongings were being boxed up and loaded into a temporary transport vehicle outside, Roberto retreated to his private underground study—a room protected by biometric scanners and steel-reinforced walls, built to house the most sensitive documents of his global enterprise.
He sat behind his massive obsidian desk, but he wasn't looking at corporate mergers or logistics ledgers.
On the screen before him flashed the digital logs of the estate’s internal security cameras—specifically the hidden audio-visual feeds from the corridors and nurseries that Roberto had installed months ago, primarily to monitor the household staff while he was away on business trips across continents.
For months, he had neglected to review those feeds, trusting Vanessa’s polished public persona. But tonight, driven by a cold, investigative fury, he began pulling up the archives from the past six months.
What he saw made his blood run ice-cold.
Fast-forwarding through weeks of footage, Roberto watched in mounting horror as the true, sickening reality of Vanessa’s behavior was laid bare.
When Roberto was away in New York or Tokyo, the gentle, refined stepmother transformed into a tyrant. He watched footage of Vanessa locking Sofía in her bedroom for hours simply because the child had a panic attack during a thunderstorm. He watched her mocking the little girl’s blindness, ridiculing her attempts to navigate the hallways without a cane when staff wasn't looking. And worst of all, he watched multiple instances of Vanessa verbally abusing María, threatening to fire the elderly housekeeper and blacklist her from every agency in the city if she ever dared report the mistreatment to Roberto.
I trusted her, Roberto thought, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white against the desk. I gave her my name, my home, and my daughter’s safety, and she treated my child like an inconvenience to be locked away.
As he continued scrolling through the encrypted video database, a strange, anomalous data file caught his eye. It was logged under a hidden subdirectory within the estate’s network—a folder labeled V-Private.
Frowning, Roberto clicked on the file.
It opened a series of recorded phone conversations—intercepted automatically by a domestic corporate firewall Roberto had installed years ago to monitor external network breaches. The recordings were dated from just three days ago.
He pressed play.
Vanessa’s voice hissed through the high-end computer speakers, sharp and conspiratorial.
“...I’m telling you, Arthur, I’m growing tired of playing the patient stepmother,” Vanessa’s recorded voice sneered. “The brat is completely blind, and Roberto is completely wrapped around my finger. If he doesn't sign over the secondary trust fund by our wedding anniversary next month, I’ll just initiate phase two. A nice, quiet legal separation on grounds of irreconcilable differences, complete with a massive lump-sum spousal payout. My lawyers are already drawing up the prenuptial loopholes we discussed.”
A male voice—smooth, slick, and deeply familiar—responded on the recording.
“Just play your cards right, Vanessa. Once we control a controlling stake in Santos Logistics through your matrimonial claims, the entire empire is ours. Just keep the old housekeeper quiet and the kid out of the way.”
Roberto stared at the screen in stunned silence.

The male voice belonged to Arthur Vance—corporate lawyer, former legal counsel to Roberto’s primary competitors, and a man Roberto had fired three years ago for corporate espionage.
Vanessa wasn't just a cruel, heartless stepmother. She was a planted asset. A calculated operative inserted into his life to infiltrate his family, manipulate his trust, and ultimately seize control of his multi-billion-dollar empire from the inside out.
