Chapter 5 - The Legal Ambush
Two weeks passed with an eerie, deceptive calm across the Hale-Santos estate.
Vanessa, living in an upscale downtown hotel suite funded by her own secret savings and whatever credit she could scrape together, felt increasingly invincible. Bolstered by Arthur Vance’s legal counsel, she truly believed Roberto was too cowardly, too concerned about his public image, and too entangled in legal technicalities to fight back effectively.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, the legal strike finally landed.
Roberto was sitting in his study when Marcus walked in, holding a formal legal summons delivered directly to corporate headquarters.
“It’s official,” Marcus announced, setting the document down on the desk. “Arthur Vance filed a multi-million-dollar civil lawsuit against you this morning on behalf of Vanessa. They’re suing for fraudulent inducement of marriage, severe emotional distress, malicious defamation, and an immediate emergency injunction to seize fifty percent of your personal liquid assets pending divorce proceedings.”
Roberto picked up the papers, scanning the legal jargon with mild, academic disinterest. “They’re moving faster than I anticipated. Greed makes people sloppy.”
“Arthur scheduled an emergency civil court hearing for next Tuesday morning before Judge Harrison,” Marcus added, raising an eyebrow. “Harrison is known for favoring swift spousal settlements in high-net-worth divorces, especially when the plaintiff plays the victim card effectively. Vanessa is planning to show up with a full media entourage to paint you as an abusive, tyrannical billionaire who locked her out in the middle of the night.”

Roberto set the papers down and looked up, his grey eyes flashing with absolute confidence.
“Let her bring the media,” Roberto said calmly. “Let her book every television network and tabloid columnist in the city. Because by the time Tuesday morning is over, Judge Harrison isn't going to be ruling on a divorce settlement. He’s going to be presiding over a criminal arraignment.”
