Chapter 35 - Two Heartbeats

Autumn painted the city in brilliant shades of amber and gold. The construction of the Beacon Institute was progressing flawlessly, and the foundation was thriving.
It was a quiet Saturday morning. Roberto was in the study, reading the morning paper, when Elena walked into the room. She looked pale, her hands trembling slightly as she clutched a small, white plastic object.
Roberto stood up instantly, dropping the paper. "Elena? What is it? Are you ill?"
She didn't speak. She walked over to him and placed the small plastic object directly into the center of his palm.
Roberto looked down. It was a digital pregnancy test. The screen displayed the word Pregnant in bold, unmistakable letters.
The air rushed out of Roberto's lungs. He stared at the small screen, his mind going completely blank, unable to process the magnitude of the information. He looked up at Elena, who was biting her lip, tears welling in her eyes.
"Are you... are we...?" Roberto stammered, entirely uncharacteristic of his usual articulate self.
"Yes," Elena whispered, a brilliant, tearful smile breaking across her face. "We are having a baby, Roberto."
Roberto dropped the test onto the desk and pulled her into a desperate, crushing hug, burying his face in the crook of her neck. He held her as if she were the most precious, fragile thing in the universe.
"A baby," Roberto repeated, his voice cracking with pure, overwhelming joy. "A family."
He pulled back, cupping her face in his hands, kissing her deeply, reverently. He had spent his life chasing acquisitions and corporate victories, but standing in his study, holding his pregnant wife, he realized that he possessed the only wealth that actually mattered.

"We have to tell Sofía," Elena laughed softly, wiping away her tears.
"She is going to be the most terrifying, overprotective big sister in the history of the world," Roberto smiled, his heart soaring into the stratosphere.
