Chapter 37 - The Final Ghost

The pregnancy progressed smoothly, filling the estate with a quiet, joyful anticipation. However, a strange administrative anomaly required Roberto’s attention one final time.
Marcus walked into Roberto’s study on a Tuesday morning, holding a sealed bank dossier.
"Boss, the forensic accountants doing the final annual sweep of your old corporate holdings flagged an anomaly," Marcus reported, handing the file over. "It’s a dormant, offshore trust account. It was buried under three layers of shell corporations. It was opened by Vanessa, ten years ago, just before she married Arthur."
Roberto took the file, feeling a brief, uncomfortable chill.
"She was siphoning money long before the major fraud," Roberto realized, scanning the documents. "She was building a safety net."
"There is over four million dollars sitting in that account," Marcus stated. "The federal authorities missed it because it was entirely inactive. Legally, since it was funded by embezzled corporate assets prior to the dissolution, the money belongs to your personal estate."
Roberto stared at the numbers on the page. Four million dollars. It was a fortune, a ghost of the greed that had nearly destroyed his life.
He didn't want the money. It felt tainted, soaked in the betrayal and lies of a woman who had tried to ruin him.
"I don't want this in my accounts, Marcus," Roberto said firmly, closing the folder.
"What do you want me to do with it?"
"Transfer every single cent of it directly into the endowment fund for the Beacon Institute," Roberto ordered, a fierce, righteous satisfaction settling over him. "Vanessa tried to steal my daughter's future. Now, her hidden money is going to fund the education of a thousand visually impaired children. We are turning her poison into medicine."

Marcus smiled, a grim, respectful expression. "Consider it done, boss. The ghost is officially exorcised."
Roberto leaned back in his chair, feeling lighter than air. The last remnant of the dark past had been completely, utterly neutralized.
