Chapter 27 - The Engagement Dinner

The news of their engagement spread through their close-knit circle with rapid, joyous electricity.
To celebrate, Roberto hosted a private, intimate dinner at the estate. The grand dining room, which used to feel cavernous and intimidating, was now filled with warm, flickering candlelight and the sound of genuine, unfiltered laughter.
Marcus sat at one end of the table, arguing playfully with María over the exact amount of garlic required for a proper roast.
Sofía sat directly beside Elena, tracing the shape of the new diamond ring with her small, curious fingers.
"It feels like a little block of ice," Sofía noted, her brow furrowed in concentration. "But it's not cold. Does it mean you are officially going to be my mom now, Auntie Elena?"
The entire table fell completely silent, the air suddenly thick with an unexpected, heavy emotional weight.
Elena looked down at Sofía, her eyes immediately welling with tears. She had loved the little girl fiercely from the very beginning, treating her as her own, but hearing the word spoken aloud was a profound, overwhelming gift.
"If you want me to be, Sofía," Elena whispered, her voice cracking with pure love. "I would be the luckiest woman in the entire world to be your mom."
Sofía smiled brilliantly, wrapping her arms tightly around Elena's waist.
"Good," Sofía declared matter-of-factly, resting her head against Elena's side. "Because Daddy is very bad at braiding my hair, and we needed someone who knows how to do it properly."
The table erupted into loud, joyous laughter. Roberto wiped a stray tear from his eye, raising his glass of wine.
