Chapter 34 - A Moment of Doubt

The construction of the sanctuary campus, officially named "The Beacon Institute," was a monumental undertaking. The budget expanded rapidly as they imported specialized materials and acoustic engineers to ensure David's vision was executed flawlessly.
Late one evening, Elena sat at the kitchen island of the estate, surrounded by sprawling blueprints and budget reports. She looked exhausted, rubbing her temples as she reviewed the latest expenditure request.
Roberto walked into the kitchen, pouring two glasses of water, and handed her one.
"You are working too late, Mrs. Santos," Roberto chided gently, kissing the top of her head.
"The numbers are staggering, Roberto," Elena sighed, leaning back in her chair. "The tactile flooring alone is costing three times the original estimate. We are pouring millions into this campus. If we miscalculated the demand, or if the logistics fail..."
She stopped, the rare shadow of doubt clouding her usually confident features.
"What if we are building something too big?" Elena whispered. "What if we can't sustain it?"
Roberto pulled up a stool beside her, taking her hands in his, ignoring the blueprints completely.
"Elena, look at me," Roberto commanded softly but firmly.
She met his eyes, finding absolute, unwavering certainty anchoring his gaze.
"Five years ago, Arthur told me that the only way to build an empire was to cut corners and hoard capital," Roberto said, his voice ringing with profound conviction. "I believed him, and I almost lost my soul. We are not cutting corners on these children. We are not hoarding our resources. If it costs ten times the estimate, I will liquidate my remaining commercial assets to fund it. We are building a fortress of light, and it will stand for a hundred years."
Elena let out a long, shaky breath, the tension leaving her shoulders. His absolute certainty banished her fear entirely.

"You are a very stubborn man, Roberto Santos," Elena smiled, a tear of gratitude shining in her eye.
"I am," Roberto agreed, kissing her knuckles. "And I am absolutely right. Now, close the folders. It's time for bed."
