Chapter 26 - The Question Asked

|

The path leading down to the lake was quiet, insulated from the joyful noise of the festival by a thick grove of ancient pine trees. The water reflected the deep, vibrant orange and purple hues of the setting sun, creating a picture of absolute, breathtaking serenity.

Roberto walked beside Elena in silence, his heart hammering a frantic, rhythmic beat against his ribs.

He stopped near a small wooden bench overlooking the water, turning to face her.

"When my entire world collapsed," Roberto began, his voice thick with emotion, breaking the quiet stillness of the evening, "I was convinced that I deserved the ruins. I thought my ambition had poisoned everything I touched, and that I was destined to live the rest of my life in isolation, paying for my mistakes."

Elena reached out, gently resting her hands on his chest.

"But you didn't leave," Roberto continued, his eyes locked intensely onto hers, searching the depths of her soul. "You walked into the ruins, you took my hand, and you helped me clear the rubble. You showed me that I was worthy of redemption. You taught me how to love without fear."

Elena’s eyes filled with sudden, shining tears. She didn't speak; she simply held her breath, entirely captivated by the raw, unguarded truth in his voice.

Roberto took a step back and slowly, deliberately, dropped to one knee on the cool, autumn grass.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the midnight-blue velvet box, snapping it open to reveal the brilliant, emerald-cut diamond.

"Elena," Roberto whispered, looking up at the woman who was his entire world. "I don't want an empire. I don't want power or legacy or corporate dominance. I just want you. I want to spend the rest of my life building a sanctuary with you. Will you marry me?"

A single tear escaped Elena’s eye, tracking a warm path down her flushed cheek. She let out a quiet, joyful sob, covering her mouth with her hand.

"Yes," Elena breathed, her voice carrying the absolute certainty of a lifelong promise. "Yes, Roberto. A thousand times, yes."

Roberto slid the ring onto her trembling finger, standing up and pulling her into a fierce, desperate, perfect embrace. They kissed under the falling autumn leaves, entirely alone, completely whole, and perfectly safe.
