Chapter 31 - The Vows

|

Spring returned to Chicago, washing away the bitter cold of winter and bringing a vibrant, blooming warmth to the city.

The wedding was not a massive, opulent society affair. It was held in the expansive, blooming gardens of the Hale-Santos estate, surrounded only by the people who truly mattered.

White chairs were set up on the manicured lawn, facing a simple wooden arch covered in trailing white roses and ivy. A small string quartet played softly in the background.

Roberto stood at the altar, his hands trembling slightly, waiting. Marcus stood beside him as his best man, offering a reassuring, steadying nod.

The music shifted to a slow, beautiful melody. Roberto’s breath caught in his throat.

Sofía walked down the aisle first, looking like a miniature angel in a pale blue dress. She moved confidently, her cane decorated with tiny white ribbons, dropping flower petals onto the grass with immense concentration.

Then, Elena appeared.

She wore a stunning, elegantly simple white gown that flowed gracefully around her. She looked radiant, her eyes locked entirely on Roberto, oblivious to the small crowd watching her.

When she reached the altar, Roberto took her hands in his. They were warm and steady.

The officiant spoke beautifully about resilience, about finding light in the darkest of places, and about the profound strength required to build a true partnership.

"Roberto, do you take Elena to be your wife?" the officiant asked.

"I do," Roberto answered, his voice thick with tears, his gaze never leaving her face. "With my entire soul, I do."

"And Elena, do you take Roberto to be your husband?"

"I do," Elena whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. "Forever."

They exchanged rings, simple bands of polished platinum, sealing the promise they had made to each other months ago in the dark.

"You may kiss the bride," the officiant smiled.

May you like

Roberto pulled Elena into his arms, kissing her with a desperate, overwhelming passion that communicated everything words failed to express. The crowd erupted into joyous applause, and Sofía cheered loudly from the front row.

They walked back down the aisle together, hand in hand, stepping boldly into the beautiful, unbroken future they had fought so hard to secure.
