Chapter 25 - The Harvest Festival

|

The Hale-Santos Foundation’s annual Fall Harvest Festival was an event that the entire community eagerly anticipated. Held in the sprawling, accessible city park they had successfully fought to secure, the festival was a vibrant celebration of inclusion and joy.

Roberto stood near the cider stand, wearing a comfortable wool sweater, watching the absolute chaos unfold around him.

Children of all abilities were running through the pumpkin patch, their laughter echoing through the crisp autumn air. The tactile petting zoo, featuring gentle alpacas and miniature horses, was a massive hit.

"I think the caramel apples are officially sold out," Elena laughed, walking up to him and slipping her arm through his. Her cheeks were flushed from the cold, and she looked breathtakingly beautiful.

"I am not surprised," Roberto smiled, pulling her closer against his side. "I saw Marcus eat at least four of them when he thought nobody was looking."

Elena giggled, resting her head on his shoulder. "Look at her."

Roberto followed her gaze. Sofía was sitting on a hay bale near the center of the park, surrounded by three other children from her academy. They were meticulously examining a massive, bumpy pumpkin, debating loudly about the best way to carve it based entirely on its texture.

Sofía looked confident, radiant, and completely unburdened by the shadows that used to haunt their home. She was thriving in the light.

"We did a good thing here, Elena," Roberto murmured, his heart swelling with a profound, overwhelming sense of gratitude.

"We did," Elena agreed softly, looking up into his eyes. "We built a world where she doesn't have to be afraid."

Roberto reached into the pocket of his sweater, his fingers brushing against the velvet box he had carried with him for three weeks, waiting for the perfect moment.

He looked at Elena, the woman who had guided him out of the darkness, and he knew that there would never be a more perfect moment than right now, surrounded by the beautiful, messy, vibrant life they had created together.

"Elena," Roberto began, his voice trembling slightly with sheer emotion. "Can we take a walk? Just the two of us, down by the lake?"

Elena looked at him, noticing the sudden intensity in his eyes. She smiled, a soft, knowing expression crossing her face.

"I would love nothing more," she replied.
