Chapter 36 - The Big Sister's Promise

Telling Sofía the news required a delicate, thoughtful approach. Roberto and Elena sat her down in the living room that evening after dinner, the atmosphere humming with electric anticipation.
"Captain, we have some very important news to discuss with you," Roberto began, kneeling down in front of her chair to be at her level.
Sofía tilted her head, her sharp intuition instantly picking up on the shift in the room's energy. "Is someone in trouble? Did Marcus eat all the cookies again?"
Elena laughed, sitting beside her and taking her small hand. "No, sweetie. Nobody is in trouble. Actually, it is wonderful news."
"What is it?" Sofía asked, leaning forward eagerly.
"Auntie Elena and I..." Roberto paused, correcting himself with a proud smile. "Mom and I are going to have a baby. You are going to be a big sister."
The room fell completely silent for five long seconds. Sofía processed the information, her brow furrowed in intense concentration.
Then, her face erupted into a massive, radiant smile. She jumped off the chair, throwing her arms around Elena's neck.
"A baby!" Sofía squealed with absolute delight. "A real baby! Can I hold it? Will it sleep in my room? Does it know how to play the piano yet?"
"The baby is very small right now, Sofía," Elena laughed, hugging her tightly. "It won't be here until the spring. But when it arrives, you can hold it all you want."
Sofía stepped back, her expression turning surprisingly serious, mimicking the grave authority she often heard in her father's voice.
"I will be a very good big sister," Sofía declared firmly, placing her hands on her hips. "I will teach the baby how to find the kitchen in the dark, and I will protect it from the fire dragons."

Roberto felt a lump form in his throat. He looked at his beautiful, brave, perfectly capable daughter, and he knew that the baby was coming into the safest, most loving home in the entire world.
"You will be the best big sister, Captain," Roberto promised, kissing her forehead. "The absolute best."
